Matthaeus Merian the elder was a Swiss engraver and painter, mostly active in Frankfurt-am-Main where he ran his publishing house. Merian studied the art of copperplate engraving in Zürich during the early 17th century. After that he worked and studied Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris for a couple of years before settling in Frankfurt in 1616 where he started working for the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry. Both Merian the Elder and the Younger is most known for the "Topographia Germaniae", a 21-volume set of detailed town views, plans and maps of most of the known world.,
