Sound installation
Artist: Mariette Parling, Sweden
Year: 2005

Sound installation with voices from men who grew up in Sweden in the 60s and 70s.

“They are all between 30 and 40 years old. They have all been brought up to appreciate that all people
are equal. They have learnt about democracy at school and in their free time.
All those times we were forced to play ‘industrialised country’ and ‘developing country’ at school, why
did it not get through to them?
Why do they find it so easy to move their moral boundaries?
Why and how did they come to the notion that they have the right to buy another person?
These were questions that I asked myself when I set off to speak with these men.
These ‘regular’, well-educated, smart, pleasant, well brought-up men, many of them married or living
with partners.”
