, This stone insect probably depicts a silkworm. China long had more or less a monopoly on silk, and they guarded their industrial secrets about how to raise silkworms jealously. A variety of myths have grown up about how the moths’ eggs were smuggled out.
According to legend, silk cultivation came to Europe in the early 550s thanks to two cunning monks from Persia. The Byzantine and Persian Empires were at war, and Eastern Rome had thus lost its supply of silk thread. During their travels on the Silk Road, two Persian Christian monks had seen silkworm cultivation in Khotan, an oasis on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. On the orders of Emperor Justinian in Constantinople, they returned to China, hid the moths’ eggs in hollow hiking sticks and in 552 travelled through India back to Constantinople where they commenced raising silkworms.
The silk farm in Khotan, which is said to have been the first outside China, may have been established in much the same way. According to legend, a Chinese princess who came to Khotan through marriage during the first decades CE had smuggled the moths’ eggs out in her hair.</pres:content><pres:context><pres:event xml:lang="sv">Insamlad</pres:event><pres:nameLabel xml:lang="sv">Luo, Zhenyu (Lo Chen Yü)</pres:nameLabel></pres:context><pres:context><pres:event xml:lang="sv">Förvärvad</pres:event><pres:nameLabel xml:lang="sv">Andersson, Johan Gunnar</pres:nameLabel></pres:context><pres:context><pres:event xml:lang="sv">Ursprung</pres:event><pres:placeLabel xml:lang="sv">Kina</pres:placeLabel></pres:context><pres:image><pres:mediaType>image/jpeg</pres:mediaType><pres:src type="thumbnail">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/tn/830287/K-11004-046%282%29.jpg</pres:src><pres:src type="lowres">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/zoom/830286/K-11004-046%282%29.jpg</pres:src><pres:mediaLicense>http://kulturarvsdata.se/resurser/License#by</pres:mediaLicense><pres:byline xml:lang="sv">Winther Åshaug, Ina Marie</pres:byline><pres:copyright xml:lang="sv">Statens museer för världskultur</pres:copyright></pres:image><pres:image><pres:mediaType>image/jpeg</pres:mediaType><pres:src type="thumbnail">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/tn/325435/representation</pres:src><pres:src type="lowres">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/zoom/325436/representation</pres:src><pres:mediaLicense>http://kulturarvsdata.se/resurser/License#by</pres:mediaLicense><pres:byline xml:lang="sv">Östasiatiska museet</pres:byline><pres:copyright xml:lang="sv">Statens museer för världskultur</pres:copyright></pres:image><pres:image><pres:mediaType>image/jpeg</pres:mediaType><pres:src type="thumbnail">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/tn/830292/K-11004-046%283%29.jpg</pres:src><pres:src type="lowres">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-om/web/image/zoom/830291/K-11004-046%283%29.jpg</pres:src><pres:mediaLicense>http://kulturarvsdata.se/resurser/License#by</pres:mediaLicense><pres:byline xml:lang="sv">Winther Åshaug, Ina Marie</pres:byline><pres:copyright xml:lang="sv">Statens museer för världskultur</pres:copyright></pres:image><pres:references><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-OM/samling/10587721</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-VKM/exhibition/2283466</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-VKM/exhibitionpart/2430077</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-VKM/showcase/2476835</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/name/3213135</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/name/1239710</pres:reference></pres:references><pres:representations><pres:representation format="HTML">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-OM/objekt/html/107782</pres:representation><pres:representation format="XML">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-OM/objekt/xml/107782</pres:representation><pres:representation format="RDF">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-OM/objekt/rdf/107782</pres:representation></pres:representations></pres:item>
