An Invitation to Kokeshi Dolls: Kokeshi dolls from Narugo spa in Miyagi: Thick sturdy bodies with squared shoulders; most of them have chrysanthemum designs on the bodies although on some of them other flowers or maple leaves are painted. Except for small-sized dolls, their heads and bodies come from two pieces of wood and are fitted into the bodies in such a way that the completed dolls make squeaking sounds if the heads are turned slightly. The eyes are drawn with single crescent lines with small eyeballs underneath (hitomabuta). This together with small noses and mouths gives the dolls very gentle but slightly aloof expressions. But for a few exceptions no lower eyelines are drawn. Besides Narugo these dolls are found in such places as Hanamaki and Hiraizumi (both in Iwate-ken). The lathework is a purely mechanical process in which a variety of inexpensive wood is used but the decoration is the important part of the doll.
