Krukan är målad med mönster i svart. På undersidan finns påskriften “Chin Hsien Bought”. Invid föremålsmärkningen finns också bokstaven “S” inskriven i en fyrkant. Kanten aningen skadad., Insamlat i Kina av Johan Gunnar Andersson., Majiayao phase, Majiayao culture, Kina före Kina M1:08, China, Function: Urn deposited in a grave
Acquisition: Bought in 1923-24 in Jin xian, Gansu province by the Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson during the Chinese-Swedish archaeological field work in NW China. The whole collection of neolithic material was brought to Sweden for publication. According to the Chinese-Swedish agreement the archaeological collection was split in half. Material that was to go back to China was sent in seven shipments between 1927 and 1936. Material that was to remain in Sweden formed the basis of the collection of what became the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.
Why this is a masterpiece
The urn represents high quality neolithic craftsmanship and painting. The vigorous spiral pattern and zoomorphic (headless frogs?) figures make it a highly attractive piece of art. The fact that it is part of the first collection of Chinese painted neolithic pottery to be scientifically documented and studied adds to its culture-historical value.
