This large bowl has an upright rim and a wide mouth. The sides curve down to the straight foot and are slightly more rounded in the upper half. The interior base has a circular impression, and the sides are decorated with an incised design of two flying parrots in juxtaposed positions. The birds are depicted in an abbreviated manner. Feathers of the wings and the tails are depicted with finely drawn parallel lines. The long tails conform to the circular form of the bowl expressing movement. An incised line below the rim encloses the decorated area. Coated with a greenish-tinged celadon glaze, this bowl has an overall greyish tone with yellowish areas. Long cracks run through the glaze. There are signs of overfiring on the outside of the bowl. The footrim is glazed, and the base within the footrim bears scars from three white clay pads on which the bowl was fired.
This bowl was probably used as a food bowl in a household of the affluent upper class.
Parrots were a popular and auspicious decorative motif in celadon wares of the Goryeo period (918-1392). They were usually depicted in flight in groups of two or three. Motifs of this kind can be found on large bowls produced in Gangjin, Buan (both in the South Jeolla Province), as well as other regions. As the parrot is not a native animal to Korea, it is assumed that the motif came to Korea from China. During Northern Song dynasty China (960-1127), the parrot featured on Yuezhou wares. Yuezhou wares have been found in Korea and are assumed to have had a profound influence on the ceramics production in Korea. This pair of parrots has long necks and is reminiscent in shape of phoenix depictions on later blue and white porcelains of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
