To my mind the evidence is conclusive, for the excavation was made quite below the surface and the stone implements found together with the pottery an equally characteristic. Lichi has published a carefully considered summary of his views in an article entitled, "Hsiaot'un and Yangshao", Unfortunately it is in Chinese, Perhaps Karlgren can give you a summary of its contents. 4. The identification of the Hsia with Yang- shao is of course hypothetical, but I think that it is a good working hypothesis. As our knowledge of the Anyang culture is increased, we see clearly that even at the end of the Yin dynasty the bronze culture is not nearly so advanced as we used to think. Take only one instance: over 8074 of the characters found on oracle-bones are true pictures of the objects, Re- ligious worship was confined to the ancesters, and social organisations which can be inferred from the data, appear to be quite primitive. 5. The fact is that I spent this summer two months at the sea side (Chinwangtao) and much of the more important mail was not forwarded., So I did not see your letter and the beautiful photographs until the beginning of September, I delayed in answering, because I wanted to discuss many of the points raised by you, but was prevented from doing so by continuous pressure of work. Again I left Peking in the beginning of Oct. and did not get back to Peking until yester- day. On my arrival this morning at the Survey I find your telegram of the 1l3th inst. waiting for me, reminding me of the fact that I have not get SPA receipt of your previous letter, Herewith I hasten to make amendments. The writing of my book has progressed more slowly than I ex- pected, and it will take me at least 2 months more. If you will Kindly let me have the more important photographs of the Sinyuan bronzes at once, I think that there is still time. I should like to see the photos. Myself rather than leaving them to the publisher. : Of the other points I will answer brief- ly as follows:- Ca 1. I agree with you about the waåikness of Nelson's evidence. In fact the supposed Mesolithic material cannot be distinguished from his supposed Neolithic. But I do think that the whole of the Northern Neolithic culture with its crude pottery and specialised implements must be different from the Yangshao (possibly somewhat older). 2. If the above conclusion is accepted, then we have only palaeolithic in Mongolia and possibly older Neolithic., I am not at all convinced that post-loessic erosion can be made responsible for the absence of true Neolithic in N. China.
