The monographs to be printed must be decided upon before hand by joint consultation between the contributors and the editors. Preferably a list should be agreed upon each year before July when our budget is made up. 2. In order to enable our Swedish colleagues to make up such a list för the coming year, I propose that for the printing of monograpns written in Sweden in the years 1930-1931 (July-July), the cost should Pe limited to boll. 5.000 silver. This ts -equallent to=t0=4 Of-our äv total reltable income, and 50-44 -0f-0uP- -printing-pudget. 3. No printing should be done in Sweden until the exchange between gold and silver is agaln normal. At the present rate of exchange Zdansky s paper which pas only 837 pages and 5 plates, costs us more pa than Doll: 3.000. If we continue to print in Sweden, Doll: 5=000 : silver will only enable us to print sach year some 130 pages and—o plates. This is obviously unsatisfactory from every point of view. I But if you agree to print in Peking, with doll: 5.000 silver we can print 400- pages and=24 plates. The difference is so great-that even if we have plenty of funds in hand, we should also consider the mat- ter. AS it is I tiink that we have-no otner possible-alternative; and the only serious sacrifice on the part of our Swedish friends is the proof-reading. But it is surely better to make this sacrifice in order to enable us to print 400 pages and 24 plates instead of-130 pages and 8 plates per year. My dear Dr: Andersson, tiis is our cliean-out proposal, woich I hope you and your friends will realise its absolute nécessity, and = i accept it in its entirely. In recent years I have taken very little part in the printing of Palaeontologlia sinica ond, I think pr. Wong has been only too glad to leave-the whole thing to Mr. Lagrelius. But now it has reached a critical point when & revision of policy can no longer be delayed. Every one of us hates the responsibility > of proof-reading. My dear Dr. Andersson, Mr Chow has showed me a letter from Mr. Lagrelius dated 6th May 1930 informing us about the shipment of 600 copies of Zdansky” s paper (& Palaeontologia Sinica Ser. C. Vol. VI, Fasc. 2). At the same time a bill has been received from the Chartered Bank collecting from us Gold doll. 813. Dr. Wong, who left for Nanking immediately after the receipt of this bill and letter, has left word asking me to write to you in some detail with regard to the whole guestion of the publica- tion of papers written in Sweden. First of all we are not in the position to pay for the Gold doltl. 813 demanded, because the special fund for the printing of Palaeonto- logia Sinica is now entirely exhausted. We-can of course pay for it out of the money received from the China Foundation, but every dollar received from the Foundation has to be accounted for strictly accor- ding to our detailed budget submitted to be approved by the Founda- tion in the beginning of July each year, and the payment of this sum was not in the items in the budget. I want to point out that we: are not responsible for this unfortu- nate state of things. Dr. Wong and I think always insisted upon knowing our liabilities before hand ever since the Palaeontologia Sinica Fund in Sweden was exhausted, but no notice seems to have been taken. As Tong ago as Oct: 20 1928, Dr. Wong wrote to Mr. Lagrelius protesting that the printing of Ser. C. Vol. V, Fasc. 5 was done without nis-Con- sent. He paid for it because it was a fait accompli, but pointed out ctearly that his consent must be obtained before any monograph should be printed in the future. I can find no answer to this letter from Mr. Lagrelius, but I presume it must have reached him since tHe tletter was registered. Yet Ser. C. Vol. VI was printed without giving us the slightest hint. The first indication was made in Prof. Wiman” s letter dated 18 Febr., 1930, when the printing was already nearly complete. I am sure that our Swedish friends will not flame us for not shouldering responsibilities incurved without our knowledge and consent in direct contradiction to our explicit statement, made more than a year ago. Be- sides, We have no means of yielding to this unexpected demand for mo- ney even if we are willing, since we have no authörity to pay for it out of the only available fund at our disposal.
