Dear Mr: lagerberg, | I told Dr. V.K. Ting about our conversation with regard to the | settlement of our. last printing =ccount with-uUr. fagreltus, and He also agreed to yowve friendly proposal to make an end of the unpleasant . | business, but in the meantime I have received another letter from Mr. Lagrelius a copy of which I enclose herewith. From this you will see that Mr, Lagrelius has not at all abandoned his ususl tactics, and in addition threatened to "disturb" the arrangement made for Sino-Swedish co=operation. Characteristically also he asks me to answer by telegram whilst he has not yet taken the trouble to reply to many letters of mine some of which date back as far as 1928, 3 i | SSA TTT ENN SEE Under the circumstance payment of his last bill will only encourage- him to persist in his bullying methods, so I regretfully withdraw my promise made at aur last meeting. I do not think I ought to pay him until a clear arrangement is made with regard to future printing, and a formal explanation is given by Mr. Lagrelius for his extremely discourteous behaviour - the spirit expressed in the last paragraph of his letter is almost as bad as its grammår. [LAST ve TNT ESR AA ML EAA Ivo mdoern nn 1 feel sure however that Mr. Lagrelius cannot possibly represent the views of the Swedish Committee as a whole. As we have failed to get any reply from Dr. Andersson to our proposal after 4 montas'! waiting, we have decided that his Royal Highness, the Swedieh Crown Prince, should be informed, for it was His Royal Highness, as Chairman of the Swedish Committee, who wrote to Dr. Ting and myself in Dec. 3lst 1924 accepting the final arrangements made. At my request Dr. Ting has written a long letter to His Koyal Highness explaining all the points at issue. I enclose it herewith for your perusal. Will you kindly forwai it on my behalf? To what has been said in that letter I have very little to add except this. Please tell Mr. Lagrelius that such explicit É promise made in that letter signed by the Crown Princé as well as by ; himself (as quoted in Dr. Ting's letter), cansot be so esxsily "disturbed as Mr. Lagrelius seems to think, and if he tries tördö Bö;'we will i spare no effort to insist upon our rights. As I have told you in my letter of l4th May, in making the necessary arrangements to enable Dr. Andersson to make excavations and take the specimens to Sweden, both Dr. Ting and myself took upon ourselves a great responsibility and we have been repeatedly criticised for our action. Our defence has always been that not only a set of duplicates will be teturned to China but also we have the sole right to publish the scientific results. You will therefore understand our feeling when Mr: Lagrelius threatens to involve our personal honour as well as our public duty. i PSTN | | fhe failure of Vr. Andersson to answer Dr.” Ting's letter makes me tnink tnat, being absorbed in his own work and not having his fila in order, he may be possibly under some false impression about the jubli- cation funds. E AB8-ÖT+ Ting has seid in his tetter to the Crown Prindte tnefe areren 2 separate funds: one in Stockholm and the other in Peking. The former was formed by contributions from 2 Swedish gentlemen (upon whom the i Uhinese Government conferred gjecorations) to the Ffalemsontologia Sinica wihout any restriction as to the papers to be printed, i.e. we could i use the money for any monograph in the said publication. The Peking fund was formed by monthly contributions from Dr. Andersson out of his salary (other funis were added to it afterwards) and was originally intended to be exclusively used for printing works on Dr. Andersson's material. But as it turned out, Dr. Andersson's material was to be worked out by Swedish scientists who preferred to have the results printed in Sweden, 4 i Å Å 3 3 | Cd hd :LL— 0358. I | | therefore we kept the Swedish contributions made in erowns in Sweden for printing monographs on Dr. Andersson's material and used the Peking! fund for general printing purpose with the understanding that in case if the fund in Sweden is insufficient for Dr. Andersson's purpose, we should use also part of the Peking Fund. At that time according to Dr. Andersson's own estimates we had more tran enough money in hand. When later on Dr. Andersson made his discoveries in Kansu, he wrote to Dr. Ting asking him to reserve the entire Feking Fund as well as the | fund in Sweden exclusively for printing papers on his collections. In a letter dated 9 Feb. 1925 Dr. Ting told him that it was undesirable and Dr, Andersson subsequently gave the idea up himself. Herewith I enclose a copy of Dr. TfTing's letter to remind Dr. Andersson of the fact In reality however the Peking fund has teen very largely used | up for the printing of Dr. Anderss ;on's own material. Only a little more than $7.000.- have been used for printing other monographs not connected with Dr. Anders- son's work. In the above fågures the interest on the 335.199.60 has not been included because the Feking Publication Fund included E] coniributions other than Dr. Andersson's and the whole was deposited <= in the banks here, making it difficult to calculate the separate inte. | rest due to each portion.
