Deer Professor Hesselman, I deeply regret that the representative of the Rockefeller Fpundation passed through Stockholm so quickly this time. We would have felt it a great privilege to be allowed to show him the East- Asiatie Collections and try to get him interested in our line of research. Our need of financial support has FR further accentuated by the decision of our Parlament some few days ago to maintain our annual government grant at the present small amount of 18,000 erowns instead of the 25,080 erowns asked for by me. Our situation is very easy to explain. I am now nearly fifty- five years old, and in another ten years I will be about to pass the age-limit that will force me to resign my present office as Curator of the East Asiatiec Collections. These ten years is the period allotted to me in order ot ful = fil my duty to deseribe and publish the very extensive and selentifi=- cally important archeological material which I excavated in China. From the memorandum on our financial needs, which is hereby enclosed, you will see that it is the question of not less than 17 monographs with a total of 1,900 pages text and 283 plates. The teehnical preparation of part of tis material has already made good progress, but the constant 00 operation during the next five years of a researeh-assistant, two techni-0180. olje Hominid Tooth from the Chou Kou Tien Deposit. In the continuation of the excavations further discoveries have been made of still higher scientific interest. According to the preli. minary report of Dr Black a number of detached teeth have been found and, most important of all, considerable part of a lower jaw whieh fully confirms Dr Blacks original conclusions as to the nature of this early relative of Man. Quite recently Dr Black and I have contemplated further additio. nal field work in Northern China, From his most recent letters deted February 18th and 25th this year it appears that this new program of research already has been submitted to the consideration of the Board of the Rockefeller Foundation. I herewith enelose a second copy of this letter and ask you kind. ly to forward the same together with my respeetful memorandum. Please accept dear Professor Hesselman my sincere thanks for all kind help in this matter. I consider it a wise policy to push this technical work during the next five years when my personal working-capacity is at its very best, leaving my remaining five years to such editorial work as will be necessary for the completing of the said monographs. I deeply regret that I have not so far been able to make our own government authorities realize the necessity of granting an incresse of funds för our actual expenses in order tö facilitate the completien during the ten years still accorded to me of those 17 monographs which nobody except myself will ever be able to write in the same exhaustive way. I now most sincerely hope that through your kind mediation the Rockefeller Foundation will extend to me their financial support for the preparation of the monogrephe as well as for printing the same, in accordance with the estimates made in the respectful memorandum which you find hereby enclosed, My earlier work in China is to considerable extent already known to the Rockefeller Foundation, and in certain lines of researeh I have had the pleasure to eooperate with seientists financially supported by the Foundation, At the time of the inauguration of the Peking Union Medical College I had just begun my areheological work. The materials so far collected were then kept in my private home in Peking. One day I had the pleasure to show those specimens to Doctor G. E., Vincent, the Pre. sident of the Rockefeller Foundation, who visited China together with Mr, Rockefeller Junior and who came to my home accompanied by Dr Hough= ton, Director of the P. U. M., C. and Dr Black, Professor of anatomy at the sald College., 079, Be The collections then shown to Dr Vincent have been published in two papers of mine, An Early Chinese Culture and The Cave Deposit at Sha Kuo T'Un in Fengtien. Later on Dr, Black has collaborated with me to a very consider. able extent. He has kindly undertaken to deseribe the extensive anthro. pological material excavated by me in the prehistoric sites of northem China, and a first volume of his monographs has already appeared, The Human Skeletal Remains from the Sha Kuo T'Un Cave Deposit in comparison with those from Yang Shao Tsun and with recent North China material. In the summer of 1921 I discovered together with my research. associate, Dr Zdansky, in a cave deposit near Peking a rieh mammal fauna, probably of early Pleistocene age. In this fauna which has been described by Dr Zdansky in his monograph, Die Säugetlere der Quartärfauna von Chou» K'ousTien, were found one molar and one premolar of a Hominid, which from the outset attracted much interest as belng evidently one of the earliest remains of ancestors or relatives of Man. At the occasion of the visit to China of H., R. H,. the Crownprince of Sweden, I had the honour, at the scientific meeting in the P. U. M. OC, auditorium Ostoker 22nd 1926, to announce the discovery of these homi- nid remains. At the same occasion I suggested the continuation of this very promising excavation as a joint enterprise of the P. U. MH. C. and the Geological Survey of China, if possible with the financial support of the Rockefeller Foundation. Representations to this effect were made to the Foundation by Dr Black and the Director of the P. U. M, UC, and the needed amount was granted by the Foundation. The excavation which followed was ecrowned with singular success, An additional molar-tooth was found and this specimen was so complete that 1t enabled Dr Black to establish a new species, Sinenthropus pekinenses. YThis remarkable tooth has been deseribed by Dr Black in his monograph, The Lower Molar, Texten är en kopia av endast förstasidan i ett brev.
