Dear Dr, Andersson, Thank you very much for your good letter of December 15th last, which has just been forwarded to me from Peking, I hope by this time you will have received reprints of both the Sinanthropus and the Ordos tooth papers. The Chinese translation of the former delayed publication somewhat for the whole English text was printed before I left Peking on December 7th last, Thank you also for "Der Drache und die fremden Teufel" which arrived safely. I do hope you will be able to get out an English edition, for it should have a wide sale both in America and England. I have excellent news for you with regard to our Tarim Expedition plan, I have been given leave from Peking for this year to complete my work on the Kansu crania, and to visit Europe again as I did in 1924, Further I have been granted leave from the College for three years,dating from January 1929, to engage in field work in central Åsia, The Foundation has, as you know, agreed to furnish the funds and the Trustees have now granted the leave. It will take me two or three months yet to complete the crania report, though I had all the preliminary part of the statistical analysis of data com- pleted before I left Peking, But the final analysis and write up still remain, When this is finished I shall go to England first and later I hope to visit Stockholm and have a chance to discuss fully with you our final plans for the expedition. I have handed in a very sketechy outline of probable expenditures to the Foundation just as a matter of form, but nothing in the nature of a definite budget forecast will be possible until I can have a conference with you. I have good hopes that I shall be able to obtain funås for the con- tinuation of the Chou Kou Tien work or rather for the enlargement of the work to include north China, We have still enough funds on hand to carry next season's work at Chou Kou Tien, I shall not be able to get a definite answer to a request for further financial backing till after the R.F, Executive meeting about two months hence, I am delighted to hear you have been going over the whole problem of the Caeénozoic of North China again, and that you feel that from the standpoint of geology the field for prehistoric anthropology offers exceptional opportunities there, The Chou Kou Tien discoveries have certainly strengthened our position with regard to the importance of the Tarim area - here's hoping we continue to have such good luck!, 00838 2 You will be glad to hear Andrew's preparations for field work in the Gobi have gone smoothly so far and the CGranger's and the rest have left New York for Peking, There is every indication that they will be able to take to the field without interference this year, The reports from Dr, Hedin's expedition were good up to the time I left Peking, and I can see no reason to suppose we will have any great difficulty in making our arrangements when the time comes, I have brought the Chou Kou Tien tooth with me for study and comparison with European material,, and I hope to make arrangements with Barlow (British Museum) who did the Pi Sin, Rhodeséan and Pithecanthropus casts to make casts of Sinanthropus! tooth for distribution, We cannot undertake to make and distribute such casts from Peking, and Dr, Wong agrees that it would be desirable to arrange metters witn Barlow, Please remember me most cordially to Professor Wiman and Zdansky and also Mr, Lagrelius, if you should see him, With best wishes for the New Year to you and yours, in which Nrs, Black joins.
