Teaching menbers of the Services has been our main work during almost the whole of the war and this kind of work will continue even during part of the next year. However, we KHsa some work for civilian students and held also degree courses to a moderate extent. "I hopg that as from next Session things will go back more or Tess to normal, änd we intend to supplement the purely language courses by more lectures on cultural subjects, and gradually to build up the staff of the Department sövas to meet these requirements. As you will have seen from the books which I hope have reached you, we have introduced G.R. for the teaching of practieel Chinese and have found it most useful indeed because it makes the students immune against mistakes in the tones. You will have realised that introducing the system implied also the obligation of producing a number of books for teaching Chinese. The worst task consisted in preparing the dictionary of which you may have seen the specimen page ineluded in "How to Study and Write Chinese Characters," I have just finished going through the master proof of the dictionary and hope it may be out by July. I was most fortunate to get somebody who writes very beautifulkty Chinese characters, and the printing äone by Humphriesis to my mind beyond praise.
