Dear Sirs, I wonder if it would be possible for you to help me with some photo- graphs of objects in your museum. In the preparation of a paper for the "Proceedings" of the 29th In- ternational Congress of Americanists, recently held in New York, and soon due for publication, I wish to discuss certain Alaskan Eskimo parallels of (or derivates from) a well-known type of animal representation in the Scytho- Siberian animal style — the "animal enroulé" or "Rolltier.! One Ordos example from your collections is published by Andersson in BMFEA 4 (enclosed photo 882.27); but I am told that you probably have addition- al examples of the type (presumably from the Ordos) in your museum. Would it be possible for you to furnish me with photographs of such specimens of which you already have negatives ? If you can do this, may I have permission to reproduce one or two of your specimens, if they happen to have a direct bear- ing on the problem I an discussing? (Needless to say, I would make a proper printed acknowledgment) . If there is a question of a choice, the features in which I am especially interested are (more or less in the order of importanoe):- A. Jolnt-marks (Celenksbetonungen), especially round joint-marks, perforations, etc., on the shoulders and hips of the beast — as you see then on several of the enclosed photos of Ordos specimens, and on one from Minussinsk, 862 .27. B> A ring (I believe originally likewise a joint-mark) in the tail: that is, at the base of the tall, or at the tip of the tall, as in 881.1 and 881.2 (Ordos: Salmony-Loo) , 881.10, 881.13 (Ordos: Loo), 882.27 and 884.33 (Tallgren-Tovos- tine: Minussinek). Any appendages attached to the outside, i.e. perimeter of the coiled animal, such as the right legs of the Chinese specimen, 882.18, and of the Loo-Ordos specimen, 88113, [IR thin type of benet ever represented with wings extending outward from the perimeter 2] Needless to say, I will gladly pay the cost of any photographs you may be able to send me. Unfortunately, the editors of the "Proceedings" are suddenly pressing me for a very early delivery of my paper (within two weeks). Hence I thought I would ask you if you would be kind enough to send me any available pho- tographs by airmail; and I enclose herewith 8 international postal reply coupons which I hope will suffice to defray the cost of airmail postage.
