Dear Mr. D'Arms, Four of my stipendiates are working in U.S.A. since the end of the spring, and they find it exceedingly valuable and interest- ing, The fifth, Malmqvist, was for a long time shut up in Ssuchuan in Western Chins, not teing allowed by the communist government to leave for the coast. Recently, however, he has reached Hongkong, and immediately repeated an application for visa to U.S.A. which he had sent in many months ago. It turns out that he shall have to wait several months before this visa can be granted, and I have therefore advised him to go to French Indochina instead, where the Ecole Frangaise d'Extråme-Orient in Hanoi gives excellent meand for sinolog- ica] studies and researches. This means that he shall have to re- nounce the visit to U.S.A. and go home to Sweden directly in the beginning of 1951.
