Coedås replied in a most charming way, he offered me a free choice between several orehistoric fields, and, after considering his offers during some few days,I made up my mind to spend the three months at my disposal in surveying a region situated near Hanoi but practically unexplored, as far as prehistoric remains are concerned. The region in question forms an archipelago about half as big as the archipelago of Stockholm and situated NE from Haiphong. Here I was able to find three open-air-sites and seven rather remarkable cave -deposits. From the extensive collec- tions brought to Hanoi from these sites our museum here in Stockholm has been promised by M. Coedås a very beautiful and highly represe- tative selection. First at the planning of this field-work and later on at its execution M. Coedås has shown me most remarkable kindness. He made me an honorary member of his institute, and in every wey I felt from the very first day in Hanoi that I was accepted as a member of his French staff of scientists. With the greatest generosity he allowed me to select from the immense collection of the museum in Hanoi l,8 berutiful bronze weapons, and in the way of exchange we have elso received extensive series of duplicate specimens from the excavations whieh have been underteken during meny years by the prehistorian of the said institute, Dr Colani. At the occasion of my departure from Hanoi M. Coedés explained that he would welcome me for a new field campain under the auspices of his institute, and I hove made preparstions for such-s'fourney whieh I hope to be able to undertske in September next year. Originally I had a fully prepared program for excevations in Japan in cooperation with Japanese colleagues, but the outbroak of war between China and Japan forced ne to inform my Japanese collemgues, that I could not take advantage of tnis offer. Consequently in October last year I addressed from Hongkong a letter to M. George Coedås, Director of Ecole frangalse d'Extröme Orient, a very powerful scientific institute located in Hanoi and organized much along the same lines as the archaeological schools established/By France and Örsat Britain. In foct the position of M. Coodés is much more important than the directors of the said schools.
