A Poetic Debate
According to legend, the Fifth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism asked his
students to write about what the Essence of Mind is. Whichever student
had the best understanding would become the next patriarch. Yuquan
Shenxiu, leader of the Northern School of Chan Buddhism, wrote a poem
anonymously on the wall in the middle of the night. Huineng, leader of the
Southern School, disagreed with the answer and responded with another
poem. In the end, the Fifth Patriarch favoured Huineng’s understanding
and passed the leadership of the Chan Buddhist sect to him.
Shenxius poem
Kroppen är kunskapens träd,
hjärtat är en blanka spegelns ställ;
putsa spegeln ständigt,
låt den inte fläckas av damm!
Yuquan Shenxiu (607-706)

Huinengs poem
Kunskapen är alls inget träd,
den blanka spegeln har inget ställ.
Om intet ting finns till,
Var kan då dammet få fäste?
Huineng (638-713)

Shenxiu’s poem
The body is the Bodhi tree,
The heart is like the stand of a clear mirror.
Wipe it diligently at all times,
don’t let it be covered by dust.
Yuquan Shenxiu (607-706)

Huineng’s poem
Bodhi is originally no tree,
nor is the clear mirror attached to a stand.
Since no single thing exists,
from where does the dust arise?
Huineng (638-713)
Translation by Göran Malmqvist
