For the Greeks, religion stood above national boundaries and they soon found counterparts to their own gods among the gods of the Egyptians. The gods of Osiris and Apis were merged into a new and popular god by the name of Serapis. In some places, local cults enjoyed a revival. However, the Egyptian king lost much of his divinity, perhaps as a result of the many foreign rulers. The king was no longer seen as a guarantee for order and tradition. In his place, the priesthood, able to interpret and understand ancient texts, was given greater influence and respect. The Jewish immigration grew during the Late Period, especially in the Delta. The largest Jewish population was found in Alexandria.De ökande kontakterna med den övriga medelhavsvärlden innebar möten med andra religioner och gudar. För grekerna stod religion ovanför nationsgränserna och de identifierade snabbt sina gudar med egyptiska motsvarigheter. Osiris och Apis smälte samman till den nye och populäre guden Serapis. På sina håll fick mindre lokala kulter ett uppsving. Däremot förlorade kungen mycket av sin gudomlighet, kanske som en följd av de många främmande härskare som hade styrt landet. Kungen sågs inte längre som en garant för ordning och tradition. I stället vann prästerskapet, som kunde tolka och förstå de gamla texterna, större inflytande och respekt. Under Sentiden hade den judiska invandringen ökat, framför allt i Deltat.
