Egypten 1.14 :: Wine
- Object description
Wine jars are a common find in the tombs of the early elite. Wine was imported from Syria and Palestine and was one of the most prestigious food items at this time. Not until the end of the Second Dynasty did the cultivation of wine gain momentum in the Nile Delta. Wine continued to be a luxury for the vast majority of Egyptians. In Upper Egypt, far from the delta vineyards, only the rulers and their families could bring wine with them into afterlife.
These wine jars are marked by what archaeologists call ’pot marks’, a type of mark identifying the origin or possibly the destination of the vessel
