Egypten 1.12 :: The hope of rebirth
- Object description
Figurines representing women were placed in graves or presented as votive offerings in temples. Prayers for fertility and children often accompanied the votive offerings while the figurines placed in graves were meant to facilitate rebirth to a life after death.
Some of the figurine heads resemble animals – often birds - rather than humans. These belong to a conceptual world that we do not know much about other than through comparisons with later images of Egyptian gods. Women with raised arms are also found on ceramic vessels from the Predynastic period. These women are believed to be dancers or mourners, both related tp death as a passage to eternal life. Also ostrich eggs were symbols of rebirth. Beads were made out of the ostrich eggshell and whole eggs sometimes richly decorated, were placed in graves.
