Purchased in Izmir, Turkey around 1960., The greek inscription is a dedication to Zeus Alsènos. Maybe that the "épiclèse" Alsènos comes from "alsos", which means "holy wood". In my opinion, the axes could be in connection with the ritual cutting of holy trees, or with the sacrifice of ox/bulls, or both.
