Cylindrical shaft hole has rounded ridge encircling bottom end. Mid -shaft, a rounded triangular knob on the back. Top of shaft extended high above hole at its back, with a broad low ridge ending in a small knob at the back and a point in front. The irregular crescent-shaped blade begins just below this upper ridge. Decor: two parallel lines following each of the upper and lower edges of the blade.SHM 20563 MMLur 097, Bought by Prof. Ture Arne in Iran in 1932, the blade’s cutting edge is jagged and may be broken off from the middle down. Dark brown surface, bronze disease?, Cleaning and conservation report. D-nr 16454012, 8.09.95. Condition: complete with strong and rather complete metallic core. Corrosion on surface is thick, hard, very uneven, dark greyish green with metallic shine in places. Corrosion bumps cover most of surface, formed in layers. Original surface layer, smooth but pitted, is hard dark green, almost black, preserved only in small part of the surface. Partially preserved surface ornamentation. The cutting edge of the axe is heavily corroded and distorted by uneven corrosion. No obvious active corrosion. Dirty surface has some oily/waxy appearance. May have been previously treated. Treatment: cleaned mechanically with scalpel, hard bristle brush and soft small rotating steel brush, under the microscope. Surface corrosion is removed as close possibly to the original surface, where preserved. Surface is degreased to the possible extent with white spirit (alcohol?). Dried.
