Why this is a masterpiece
This masterly potted and painted vase was probably an imitation of basketry. It is magnificently produced for its age and the resources available at the time.

History of the Object
The vase is one of seven objects from Ismailabad dating to ca 4000 BC, which were a gift from the Shah of Iran to King Gustaf VI Adolf, when the Shah visited Sweden in 1956. The objects came to the museum as a bequest of the king.
