This and MM 1977:11 are inscribed with the same inscription (with minor variants noted in the transliteration below) of Entemena (also read Enmetena), who ruled the city-state Lagash c. 2450 BC. This city-state consisted of the main cities Lagash (Modern Al-Hiba) and Girsu (Modern Tello), as well as some other cities. According to our text also the city Badtibira belonged there, at least for some period. In the publication by H. Steible 40 clay cones (including our two clay cones) inscribed with this text are listed. Two of these clay cones are known to have been excavated in Badtibira (Modern Madain), all the others are without recorded provenance. The inscription deals with the construction by the ruler Entemena of the temple for the goddess Inanna and the god Lugal-Emush. The temple was called Emush; it was situated in the city Badtibira. Our two clay cones together with all the duplicates were probably once placed in the walls of this temple. Translation: “For the goddess Inanna and the god Lugal-Emush, Entemena, the ruler of Lagash, built the Emush, their beloved temple, and ordered these clay cones for them. Entemena, who built the Emush, his (personal) god, is the god Shulutul.
