Horses have long and narrow bodies and small heads without manes. The horses are bound together by a yoke on their backs; the outer horses have a girth. All horses have two narrow breast-bands, the lower ones with a small tuft. Each horse is held separately by one rein, which divides just below the neck on either side of the head; the reins are fixed to a nose-band and cheek-piece. There are two breaks on the chariot, probably these two parts joined one pole, which ran up between the inner horses. The body of the chariot is small and has rounded corners decorated with palmettes. Athena is just mounting the chariot, reins in her right hand. Perhaps she held a spear in her left hand. She is wearing a Corinthian helmet, aegis with incised scale-pattern below which two snakes are hanging down over her stomach, obliquely folded full-length tunic, and sandals.</pres:description><pres:content>Me. 0814, SCE 1930., Style II B (?), see SCE III, 388.

Acquisition: Excavated at Mersinaki in north-western Cyprus by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition (1927-1931). Acquired by the Cyprus Collections, subsequently the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm in 1931 when the finds from Cyprus were brought to Sweden and the museum set up.
Why this is a masterpiece
This is a unique composition in the Coroplastic Art of the period. The cult of Athena was widespread in Cyprus during the fifth century BC and this object is indicative of the strong cultural ties with Greece.
