pl XVI:2-3, cat no 62., Sanctuary. Squares J 10-11. Level 96.6., Function: Statue of a man dressed in a chiton, with his head covered by a veil. Flat body in frontal position, made in two pieces. Left arm is raised, right arm missing. The statue probably depicts a priest performing a religious ceremony and it is part of the cult centre at Ayia Irini.
Acquisition: Excavated at the cult site at Ayia Irini, north-western Cyprus by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929. Acquired by the Cyprus Collections, subsequently the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm in 1931, when the finds from Cyprus were brought to Sweden and the museum was set up.
Why this is a masterpiece
The life-size statue of a priest performing a ceremony is a remarkable terracotta. The motif is unusual and the craftsmanship excellent.
