Pyxis: concave flange for the lid; the rim of the lid and the flange of the pyxis have two pairs of small, corresponding, circular perforations; rather low, convex body; low ridge on underside marking base. Pale red clay; brownish red to dark brown paint. Lid: lines, dots and crosses on the horse’s heads, muzzles, throats, and along their manes, backs and tails – depicting harnesses and reins; remaining parts of the horses are painted; on the platform on two sides of the horses a horizontal line and a central group of thirteen vertical strokes, flanked by two groups of thirteen zigzag lines; below the ‘platform’ three decorative zones separated by triple bands; the inner zone is dotted, in the second zone groups of thirteen vertical zigzags each alternate with single swastikas, and in the outer zone groups of thirteen short, vertical strokes alternate with crosses; underside reserved. Pyxis: two bands on the flange; on body a large triglyph-and-metope frieze, subdivided by triple, vertical lines: chequered panels flanked by rectangles with stacked, double chevrons alternate with metopes containing hatched swastikas; double, connected circles with central dots and a dot on each side between the arms of the swastikas; one band above and one below the frieze; on lower body a chain of large, connected dots; extra dots above and below the chain; one band above and two below; the underside is divided into three zones by triple, encircling bands; the outer zone has thirteen groups of thirteen vertical strokes; the two inner zones contain dotted, wavy lines; at the centre a small cross with dots between the arms; three bands encircle the cross.MM 1974:007, Bequest of king Gustaf VI Adolf.
