Yellowish red clay; black glaze; added white, red, pink and brown paint. Mouth top reserved; shoulder and most of body have white ground; two bands encircling outer edge of shoulder/upper part of body; two bands above figures; further down on body a bier with the deceased seen in profile, facing right, lying with his head propped up by a pillow; at the feet of the deceased stands a mourning woman; further to the right is a grave stele; brown base line; reserved groove at junction between body and base; edge of base and underside reserved.NM Ant 0413, Gift from the Swedish and Norwegian Consul at Piraeus, Mr. M. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria., Mended.
