Red clay; black glaze; added white, brown and purple paint. Mouth top reserved; shoulder and most of body have white ground; faint traces of palmettes on shoulder; two bands encircling outer edge of shoulder/upper part of body; two bands above figures; on body a stepped and decorated grave stele; to the left a youth with brown hair, a petasos on his back, wearing a short chiton and boots; he holds two spears and a purple fillet; to the right a woman with brown hair standing frontally, facing left; she holds a purple wreath in her right hand and a basket with a fillet attached to it in her left hand; black base line; lower body and base black.NM Ant 1707, Purchased in Athens in 1922. Gift from ?, A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts.
