Cup mouth with straight sides; narrow neck; sloping shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering downwards; vertical band handle from neck to shoulder; disc base. Light red clay; black glaze, partly misfired; added white. Mouth black except top; on shoulder one row of bars and one of rays; outside of handle black; black band encircling angle between shoulder and body; on body opposite handle three palmettes and scrolls separated by black arcs and lotus buds(?) – all on white ground, added white and incisions; remaining part of body and base top black; three wet-incised bands on lower body; one narrow band encircling base edge.NM Ant 1259, Deposited in 1887 by the Technical School, Stockholm, in the National Museum., A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts.
