Small cup mouth; splaying neck; sloping shoulder, sharply set off from body; sliced handle from neck to shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering downwards; disc base with sloping edge; concave bottom. Red clay; red ochre wash; white slip; black glaze; added red. Inside and outside of mouth (top excluded), neck, outside of handle, lower body and base top black; shoulder reserved with vertical bars between thin lines and five black palmette fans and tendrils with buds and dots; on body (right below shoulder) double row of dots between bands and large frieze on white ground: three dancing satyrs (the one in the centre playing the double pipe), ivy branches, a cornucopia and a large, pointed amphora - added red and incised lines marking details; two, superimposed, red bands below frieze.</pres:description><pres:content xml:lang="en">NM Ant 1699, Gift in 1921 to the National Museum, Stockholm, from the Friends of the National Museum., A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts.
