Deep cup mouth; tall, narrow neck with angular ridge at top; moulding at junction between neck and shoulder; shoulder sharply set off from body; vertical, flattened handle from neck to shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering towards base; tall disc base with groove around upper edge; concave bottom with central nipple. Light red clay; red ochre wash; white slip; black glaze; black paint, misfired to reddish brown at places; matt, red paint. Outside of mouth, neck, handle, lower body and base top black; shoulder and most part of body white; three black and red palmette fans and scrolls on shoulder; thin, black line at outer part of shoulder; meander pattern between thin, black bands right below shoulder; on body opposite handle a large, stepped funerary stele with acanthus ornament at the top - a youth facing left, sitting on one step of the stele, wearing a short, transparent himation, a hat hanging over his shoulder, holding a staff; to the left of the stele a female figure is standing, facing right, holding a box with offerings (?) in her hand; to the right of the stele a bearded, male figure is standing, draped in a red himation; base line below figures; base edge reserved.</pres:description><pres:content xml:lang="en">NM Ant 1693, Gift from the Friends of the National Museum in 1920. Purchased at Janakopoulos’ in Paris., A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts.
