Donated by Mrs Hellner to the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, from where it was transferred to the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities., A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria., About half of rim missing. Black glaze almost entirely worn off., H 9.5. Ø 7.3.
