Light-red, Attic clay; black glaze, misfired to grey; applied white; red ochre wash. Interior of rim cup encircled by broad, black band; rim top reserved; exterior of rim cup black; neck reserved; handle exterior black; one row of bars, one of rays; applied white on most of body; on upper body meander between bands; below this, double ivy stem (leaves and buds) between bands of lattice; lower body black glazed with three reserved, wet-incised bands; base top black glazed; base edge and bottom reserved.MM 1956:268, Gift from the Foundation of Knut and Alice Wallenberg., A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria., Rim chipped.
