They did this with the aid of a rope, where knots designated the measures. While the farmers toiled in the blazing sun, the scribes sat in the shadow of a baldachin, recorded field areas, observed cattle and calculated the amount to be paid in tax. Compared to the fate of the shepherds and farmers, their position was enviable. These statues depict scribes, both from the Middle Kingdom., Medan vetet mognade sändes skrivare ut för att mäta upp åkrarna och uppskatta skördens storlek. Jämfört med herdarnas och böndernas lott var deras ställning avundsvärd.
