The material came raw or processed to the town, to be spun, dyed or woven to fabric or knotted in rugs. Silk, too, was produced in the region and Kashgar was famous for its ikat fabrics in which silk and cotton were combined to create rich and colorful products.

The extensive collection of objects from Kashgar in the most western part of China formed by the missionary Lars Erik Högberg and his collaborators was intended for the mission exhibition arranged in Stockholm 1907.

The aim was to present the working environment of the missionaries. Apart from their Christian evangelization they were getting closer to the local population by way of health care and what could be named “development work”. The idea was to let this be mirrored in the exhibition; to show that the population of Sinkiang was in need of education, and that even in this remote corner of Asia there was existing knowledge to draw on, particularly in the crafts.</pres:content><pres:image><pres:mediaType>image/jpeg</pres:mediaType><pres:src type="thumbnail">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-em/web/image/tn/2084255/image.jpg</pres:src><pres:src type="lowres">https://collections.smvk.se/carlotta-em/web/image/zoom/2084254/image.jpg</pres:src><pres:mediaLicense>http://kulturarvsdata.se/resurser/License#by-nc-nd</pres:mediaLicense><pres:byline xml:lang="sv">Malmberg, Björn</pres:byline><pres:copyright xml:lang="sv">Statens museer för världskultur</pres:copyright></pres:image><pres:references><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/exhibitionpart/1853256</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1064765</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1066593</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1066596</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1066598</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175584</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175588</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175592</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175596</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175600</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1175604</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180056</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180060</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180064</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180068</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180072</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1180095</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1234212</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1249007</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1249023</pres:reference><pres:reference>http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/objekt/1249038</pres:reference></pres:references><pres:representations><pres:representation format="HTML">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/showcase/html/2008133</pres:representation><pres:representation format="XML">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/showcase/xml/2008133</pres:representation><pres:representation format="RDF">http://kulturarvsdata.se/SMVK-EM/showcase/rdf/2008133</pres:representation></pres:representations></pres:item>
