Bowles, producent för Contemporary Huichol Art Exhibition i samband med huichol utställningen på etnografiska museet i Stockholm, juni till augusti 1984., Denna garntavla berikar museets samlingar av nutida indiankonst avsedd för en yttre marknad, för avsalu till bl.a. seriösa samlare och turister. Etnografiska museet visade 1984 en stor vandringsutställning med huichol-konst, speciellt dessa typiska garntavlor utförda på en yta av bivax och med motiv hämtade från huichol-indianerna schamanistiska symbolvärld och från visioner under inflytande av hallucinogenen peyote, en speciell kaktus. Huichol, eller wixarica, fick kontakt med kristna-katolska missionärer först på 1700-talet och har länge betraktats som ett mycket värdekonservativt indianfolk som bor upp i de svårtillgängliga Sierra Madre-bergen i västra Mexiko. En svensk som besökt och beskrivit huichol är John Hedberg som på 2000-talet donerat till museet ett stort antal huichol-föremål, inte minst en stor garntavla som hänger i ett av trapphusen. Denna samling (1984.14) är ett exempel på att den kungliga familjen/släkten har förärat museet med ett flertal betydande precolumbiska och etnografiska samlingar från Amerika: utöver depositioner från Livrustkammaren och Hovstaterna, se t.ex.: 1832.3; 1886.1; (1887.8); 1893.9; 1903.9; 1912.9; 1920.8; 1928.1; 1931.25; 1931.26; 1935.6; 1936.9; 1937.5; 1938.2; 1938.36; 1942.24; 1946.42; 1950.3; 1955.37; 1957.7; 1960.30; 1961.26; 1962.1; 1967.24. SB, 2011-01-10. , This yarn painting is an addition to the museum´s pool of contemporary Native American art of the Americas, an art that is aimed towards an outside market, for serious collectors and tourists. In 1984 the Museum of Ethnography exhibited a large touring exhibition about Huichol (Wixarica) art, particularly yars paintings that are made by pressing yarn on a surface of bees wax and with schamanic symbolic motives from the Huichol mythology and related world view, including visions during the influence of the hallucinogenic peyote cactus. Then Huichol received contact with Christian-Catholic missionaries as late as in the 1700s and has since long time been regarded as very value conservative, traditional, living in isolated households in the rough Sierra Madre mountains. The Swede John Hedberg has visited the Huichol a number of times and has donated to the museum a considerable amount of Huichol objects, not the least the large yarn painting hanging close to the museum entrance.
