This ethnographical collection has its origin in an ethnographer-social anthropologist, Irene Svensson, in the field as a part of the production of an exhibition. Irene Svensson had also earlier done fieldwork in Oaxaca, Mexico, and also in Nicaragua. Irene Svensson was employed as archivist at the Museum of Ethnography fom mid 1980s to ca 2006.
For basic facts about the "traditional" ethnography of Oaxaca, see
Handbook of Middle American Indians (vol. 7, Part 1, Ethnology. 1969).
