Babisa chiefs like to stick with skilled dancers and to be sure of keeping them at their "court", they sometimes push their eyes out at them. The dancer does not have to use his eyes to practice his art, because this mainly consists of leg and stomach movements, which are performed on the spot. During our stay at Kapata, a babisa master sent two famous dancers to show his art to Fries and me (fig. 259). One of the dancers was blind, for the chief had broken his eyeballs with his thumbs! On the legs they carried dance skulls of shells of fruits from Oncoba spinosa (fig. 260), and in the belts they had stuck skulls of the type I have previously described and depicted (fig. 251)."
