The medicine, which is stored in a sitatunga hoof, consists of an ointment, which includes red dye, prepared from the wood of Pterocarpus angolensis. The color red is considered by the people of Bangveolo to possess a magical ability to keep evil beings at bay. With the above ointment, batwa lubricate their bodies, when they are forced to fish in streams, where there are crocodiles. Even newly made canoes are lubricated with this ointment to keep crocodiles from attacking. The hoof, in which the medicine is stored, is 6.2 cm. long. Similar "crocodile medicine" is also stored in gourd shells. One is depicted here (Fig. 191); it has a length of 9.3 cm. and is provided with a string, on which it can be worn around the neck."
