In the swamp, however, there is no suitable material for paddles, so this must be taken on solid ground. Batwa use paddles only on the Luapula River and when at high tide they travel over lagoons or in canals and do not reach the bottom with the stakes. The paddles are of the shape shown in Figs. 105 and 106. The original of the former has a length of 1.92 cm, and the width of the paddle blade amounts to 12.5 cm. On the original of Fig. 106, the shaft is interrupted. The blade, which is decorated with a cutout, measures 11.5 cm at the widest point."
