To catch smaller fish, suitable for bait, twa people use cages of the appearance shown in Figs. 119 and 120. The cages are made of reed tubes, which are tied tightly together with bast. The mouth of the cage is round or oval and is kept open by means of a coarse wick bent in an arc, to which the pipes are attached. The cage tapers wedge-shaped towards the rear end, which is closed almost as if on a hole, large enough to be able to insert your hand. Through this hole the caught fish is taken out. From the widening in the estuary, reed sticks are tied tightly next to each other and directed obliquely inwards. They are arranged so that they leave a very narrow passage to the inside of the cage, but yield to pressure from the outside, so that the passage is then enlarged. If these locking pins are exposed to pressure from inside the cage, however, it is completely closed. Before the mare is laid out for fishing, the hole in its rear end is clogged with a grass pin. It is clear that the fish easily get into such a fishing gear, but that it can then not get out."
