Name and identification of character
A vädda prince, vädi kumaraya (Sin.).

Context
This character appears in the story of Maname, Maname Kathava (Sin.), in Kolam performances. It is a new character introduced by the carver to heighten the theatrical effect of the performance. This character does not exist in older texts.

Material
Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica).

Iconography
The face reveals the character of a vädda. The face is painted in blue and the lips in red. The eyes are blood red in appearance. These characteristics represent a wild character who kills animals, preying on their flesh.

The head-dress is painted in bright colours. The carver has paid much attention to colour-combinations. Many of the motifs are difficult to identify. Some of the patterns appear to be in the form of caterpillars, shaded in green, yellow and red. Two gabled roofs, called kulara ge (Sin.), are drawn one over the other, with side entrances painted in the form of white, red and green porticos. These appear to be silhouetted by a few clouds. There are two forehead bands, one over the other. The lower forehead band is heavily ornamented with the leaf and petal, pala-peti (Sin.), motifs. The other band is decorated with conical shaped geometric patterns.
