Name and identification of character
The mask depicts a demon of the Gara group, Gara rassaya (Sin.).

Context
This demon character appears in three contexts: (i) in the demon ritual called Gara yakuma or Gara toile, (ii) in stage two in a Kolam performance, (iii) as a finale in ritual ceremonies.

Material
Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica).

Iconography
The mask has three cobra-hoods as its head-piece. The cobras are painted with geometrical designs.

The mask has been in long use. This is evidenced by the decay of the wood on the inside of the mask.

The ears are missing and the slots for the ears are damaged. The slots are tied with two strings of animal hide. The lower jaw and the eye-teeth are missing. The eyes are bulging. There is a holy spot, tilaka (Sin.) between the eyes.
