[ocr]1916.9.54 Name and identification of character A king, raja (Sin.). Context This character appears in the story portion in a Kolam performance. Material Wood, Vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica). Iconography The crown is broad and round with sculpted figures and petal and flower decorations. At the centre is the figure of a lion. The lion is a symbol indicative of a Kandyan monarch. The other figure, a lady seated on petals, is the figure of a lady creeper, nari lata (Sin.), a mythological figure (See Preface) (not the figure of the Buddha, as it is wrongly identified in the Umlauff Catalogue, cf. also no. 1916.9.27). The face is copper-coloured. The nose is straight and prominent. The mouth is glum. The sideburns are prominent. The pinnacle does not fit the top rim of the crown.
