The elder man is cutting barbs with a stone chip on an arrowhead, while the younger is intently watching the operation. The Papuans are a bow-using people. Bows of either bamboo or palm are found in many parts, while the reed arrows are variously barbed with bone or Echidna spines, or cut in the hard-wood point as shows in the picture. The point readily pulls out of the shaft and remains in the wound when the victim attempts to withdraw it. The arrow are not intentionally poisoned, but tetanus often supervenes.
