They came from Amsterdam and Dundee, from Augsburg and Lübeck. Merchants, artisans, and farmers were attracted to Gothenburg and Sweden. Here they were free from paying tax and their buisnesses could thrive. Some were fleeing religious oppression or debts. Some families stayed in Gothenburg. The woman by herself is Maria Fistulator, daughter of a barber-surgeon who probably came from Germany. The two women could be sisters Sara and Cornelia Herwegh, the grandchildren of Gothenburg's first weighmaster, who moved here from Lüneberg in Germany. The painting of the three women probably dates from the 1600s and may depict three generations of Dutch women.
