Food was an imported matter in Nya Lödöse. Food to survive. Food to buy and sell. Luxury food to display and show off with. From Norway and England, from the Netherlands and Germany came ships carrying rye and dried fish, salt and beer, herring and spices. The ships even brought pots and dishes to cook with. Farmers from the countryside sold butter and cheese, meat and hazelnuts. In the townspeople's cooking pots simmered turnips, onions and cabbages from their own kitchen gardens and meat from their own hens and pigs.
